The 2022 Yamazaki Cask Series is a collection of four whiskies that lifts the veil on the foundational pillars of Yamazaki single malt. Tsukuriwake means “artisanship through a diversity of making”, a philosophy that the House of Suntory has embraced in its entirety.
These bottles will be sold via ballots that will take place between 28-30 June 2022. To be notified when the ballots are live, please enter your email address below.
Matured exclusively in specially-crafted casks from hand-selected American oak, this single malt shows off the heart of what makes Yamazaki, Yamazaki – the puncheon. These large casks can hold up to 480 litres, around double the capacity of a standard hogshead. Puncheons interact with the spirit more slowly that smaller casks, leaving subtle layers of fruit and spice on top of a spirit character that shines.
Ripe persimmon, peach and vanilla
Clean, velvety and mild, with caramelised butterscotch notes
Sweet vanilla, woodiness, pleasant long finish
This rich and complex single malt has been matured in meticulously-selected oak casks from northern Spain. These casks that provide Yamazaki with depth and layered character, imparting notes of dried fruits and a subtle acidity.
Dried raisins and prunes, with hints of sundried tomatoes
Rich and decadent with subtle acidity
Buttery with lingering acidity and a hint of bitterness
The 2022 Edition Yamazaki Mizunara shows off the elegant spice of Japan’s famous mizunara oak. Yamazaki has used this oak since the distillery first opened, but it was not until after World War II that it began to use locally-grown mizunara in earnest, embracing the distinctive spice and incense-like character this oak provides.
Rich and elegant top note, custard cream and cinnamon
Gentle on the tongue, aromatic and round with sweet spiced notes
Distinctive deep woody notes reminiscent of Japanese incense
The ‘hidden accent’ element in Yamazaki single malts is the peated malt that provides earthy, rich undercurrents and complex smoky backbone. This whisky has been made with a blend of carefully-selected peated malt that creates the rich and refined smoky character that Yamazaki is known for.
Subtly smoky with green herbal notes
Gently peated with hints of earthiness, pineapple and citrus notes
Complex with lingering peatiness
The four whiskies of the Yamazaki Tsukuriwake Selection represent the individual elements that make Yamazaki, Yamazaki. From its rich, fruity Spanish oak core to its aromatic Mizunara spice, the gentle smoky layers to the soft and sweet fruit, this series highlights each of the elements – and the considerable skill – that goes into creating an icon.
Yamazaki was founded in 1923 at the foot of Mount Tennozan in southern Kyoto. It was founded by Shinjiro Torii, who selected the site for its unique climate and access to very pure, soft water, and set out to make an exceptional and distinctly Japanese whisky. His first product, Suntory White Label released in 1929, was not an instant hit, but domestic success would come with the launch of Suntory Kakubin in 1937.
Torii’s son, Keizo Saji, suceeded him as Yamazaki’s second master blender in 1961. Saji would oversee the building of the Hakushu and Chita distilleries in the 1970s, but more importantly for Yamazaki he would spearhead the move into releasing single malts – as opposed to blended whiskies – in 1984, which paved the way for Yamazaki’s worldwide popularity today.
