Clynelish 1996 / 18 Years Old / Signatory / TWE Exclusive
Product Description

When we visit Signatory Vintage's warehouses to choose casks, we always look out for Clynelish. Andrew Symington and his team have a selection of great casks, and some of their Clynelishes are stunning – this is one of them. It has a heavy sherry influence, with dark fruit and spice, but it's not enough to swamp the Clynelish character, with wax and fresh fruit leaping out of the glass after a few minutes. Fruity, spicy and complex – a must-have.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Billy A

    • Nose

It starts dark and rich, with layers of polished leather, warm raisins, rich earth, bark, damp wax jackets and spiced baked apples. However, behind that are softer, sweeter notes, with honeysuckle, apple blossom and sweet fruit.

    • Palate

After the heaviness of the nose, the palate starts surprisingly soft and rounded, with sponge cake batter and sweet raisins accompanying spicy ground cinnamon. Apples and aniseed balls come in behind that, with fruity dark chocolate and vanilla cream icing softening the spicy heat. As the fruity core fades, rich earthy notes develop with soft nutmeg and stewed fruit.

    • Finish

Long and lingering, starting with caraway-spiced shortbread and apple crisps, before fading to rose water and dried fruit.

    • Comment

An intense, rich and mouth-watering dram, which opens up to reveal the traditional Clynelish fruitiness after a little time in the glass. One to savour as it develops.

    Paulo,

This is stunning whisky. The sherry, fruit and the usual Clynelish waxiness are balanced to perfection

    Nathan,

Are you kidding m helminen? This is a stunning expression. What I particular love is the way the whisky yo yos between thick caramel fudge sherry notes back to uber fruity waxy notes and then back again. Try warming the dram in your hand. Superb selection from the guys at the TWE. Well done.

    M. Helminen,

A very good and full Clynelish but somehow I was left wanting a little more richness or complexity. The dram doesn't develop or change that much during its time in the glass.

    Dr J,

This dram literally stunned me, repeatedly. The balance between cask and liquid is ambrosia, the fruit is complex and oscillates between red/blue berry, citrus, and even to stone fruit. The other side has smoke and meat and power, providing the backbone and perfect complement to the cask. I am close to speechless.

    Mikko,

Absolutely top class sherry cask, no sulphur at all. TWE has done a great job picking up this cask like they did with the previous Clynelish/TWE/Signatory version. This one is much sweeter and softer presentation than previous 17 year old and there is also less peaty pine resin notes. It''s very interesting how Clynelish spirit reacts with full sherry maturation. Today it''s so rare to get this quality of cask strength sherried malt. This is really a bargain for any whisky enthusiast.
