Balvenie 42 Year Old

It was 60 years ago that apprentice coppersmith Dennis McBain first learned what it means to ‘walk the dog’ through a distillery’s warehouse. The copper dog – a length of pipe, sealed at one end and corked at the other – would be lowered into casks of maturing whisky to pilfer the odd dram for later consumption. It’s well known that the angels take their share from the warehouses – but what Dennis learned that day is that sometimes the dog takes one too.

The dogs of Dufftown

This lesson in distillery life inspired Dennis to suggest using copper dogs when tasting whisky with guests in the Balvenie’s warehouse 24. Not only are they easier to handle than the traditional valinch but, in his words, ‘they’re a symbol of how much people really do appreciate a good drop o’ Balvenie whisky… straight from the cask.’

Over his long career as a coppersmith at Balvenie, Dennis has tended the stills that shape the distillery’s rich, honeyed spirit. He was there more than four decades ago when the casks for this expression were filled, the copper dogs he made were used to sample it while it matured, and he was there the day it was bottled.
