The distillery's flagship malt displays the classic Benromach creaminess with malty notes and a lightly peated character. Styled on the Speyside whiskies of the 1960s, it is finished in first-fill sherry casks for a year which adds a delicate spiciness to the mix.

Benromach 10 was introduced in 2009, 11 years after the distillery resumed operation under Gordon & MacPhail ownership. This is a superb entry-level bottling that punches above its price point.

Tasting Notesby
Rocky Lancer

Nose Toffee and butterscotch with hints of liquorice and green apple.

Palate The liquorice and green apple continue from the nose, joined by a maltiness, smoke and spicy cardamom and white pepper.

Finish Warming, with the fruit and spice slowly dissipating to leave a delightful malty smokiness.

Comment Benromach has succeeded in its aim of going back to the classic Speyside style of the 1960s, and the whisky has a very traditional feel about it.

70cl | 43%

This limited release has been blended using some of the last remaining casks from the early 1980s. Sweet and fruity at first, the hallmarks of sherry-cask maturation then come to the fore with notes of dried fruit, menthol, clove and white chocolate. A wonderful example of whisky from yesteryear in a modern decanter and stylish wooden box, it highlights the past and the present of Benromach.

Reviews

'Clean, soft, gently sweet… Layered and complex mixing heavy mature elements (cedar, cigar) with the light (pear and citrus)....This behaves as if the distillate has folded in on itself, creating a mass of different complementary layers. It is, as these whiskies should be, a totality rather than a succession of aromas.'

'Very excellent as such, but also singular, and different from any other old malt. That's clearly a tremendous asset, when many whiskies – unless peated – tend to taste more or less the same.'

Tasting Notes

Colour The beautiful golden amber hues of the 35 Years Old promise a satisfying, complex Speysider and it generously fulfils its promise.

Without Water Aroma The nose offers rich sherry influences with orange marmalade, kiwi and grapefruit aromas, complemented by gorgeous cinnamon spice. Taste Initially, it is sweet on the palate with honey, fruit cake, ripe banana and melon flavours. Watch out for the smooth white-chocolate edge as it develops, combined with a soft menthol note, giving a full body and long and smooth fruity finish.

With Water Aroma Sherry influences with honey, blackcurrant and beeswax polish aromas, complemented by a subtle hint of cloves. Taste A fabulous combination of white pepper followed by dried tobacco, stewed pear, raisin and zesty orange-peel flavours, heightened by a delicate edge of charred oak…the result of lingering for more than three decades in oak casks.
