Originally a Travel Retail exclusive, Laphroaig QA cask is initially matured in bourbon barrels before being finished in charred American white oak casks. The result is a peaty, warming and spicy whisky.

Laphroaig QA Cask Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Billy A

Nose: Icing sugar sweetness backed up by iodine and brine. Some black rubber, warm leather and gravelly minerality hide underneath the sweetness.

Palate: Sweet and syrupy, with candied ginger, hints of black rubber, light coal smoke, bitter charcoal, sweet apple and salted caramel.

Finish: Coal stoves and floral syrup. Lingering sweetness slowly develops into soft woodiness.

A big fan of the Quarter Cask and 10YO, this is also a superb whisky. It's not as 'definite' as the 10YO but it's a unique drink of it's own, a good one at that. Smooth, full of flavour and refined, a worthy and subtle Laphroaig.

Not exciting as a Laphroaig can be, passable, flavours are subdued, both on nose and palate.

I am a Laphroaig 10yr stalwart, however after tasting the QA cask I think I am converted. Without losing the medicinal/peaty taste they have added the extra complexity/hit of vanilla that really make this whisky a fully rounded dram, that should appeal to more than the select few. While not offering the punch in the face of the ten year old, it provides the intense sting of a Chinese burn delivered a close family friend.

Not as intense as the standard . It's good ,but it lacks the in your face quality . I assume it's for people who prefer a lighter whisky .

Very smooth, sweet, slight peat. Strong smoky nose, but then it deceives your tongue and gives you a wood and fruit delight.

The worst Laphroaig I have tried - weak, insipid, too much vanilla and caramel, basically an easy-drinking Laphy that loses a lot of the distillery medicinal/phenolic peat character.
