Togouchi's ageing warehouse must be one of the world's most unusual – it is an old railway tunnel in the eponymous town that was never used. This is the 12 year old, a blend of Scottish malt and Canadian grain that's fruity and citrus-rich.

    I tried this in a bar (Refuge) in Manchester. The barman knew zero about it, but I thought it was worth a punt. I’m glad I did! When I first smelt it, it felt like it was lacking any real character, but once it had settled a bit, the sweetness, like brown sugar really came through as did the edge of smokiness. A really pleasant dram.

    This took a bit of getting used to for me. But after finishing the bottle and trying in a variety of glass styles, with water & with ice I've found it to be a very enjoyable whisky. The nose had a lot of vapour to begin with, but rest a while and definite hints of grass & subtle citrus are there. The palate is quite fruity with a heather like sweetness that gets far more pronounced after letting a cube of ice melt for a couple of minutes. I know that's sacrilegious to some, but I find it allows other flavours to come through that just aren't there when neat. Togouchi 12 Year Old is a unique drop that does reward with a bit of perseverance.
