Kick-start your weekend with a true American Classic: Jacquin’s Rock and Rye.

Jacquin’s Rock and Rye is a classic combination of rye whiskey, rock candy and fresh fruit. A quintessential part of American culture, it is now available in the UK in its original glory. Handcrafted to 80 proof, this naturally-infused whiskey is made by America’s first producer of Rock and Rye, Charles Jacquin et Cie. Jacquin is the ONLY producer who continues to offer the product in its original form, with fresh fruit suspended in every bottle.

As America’s oldest cordial producer, Charles Jacquin et Cie, is famous for its hand-crafted liqueurs, spirits, and cordials. The company was founded in 1884 by a Frenchman, who brought to Philadelphia his family’s “savoir-faire” of the production of liqueurs, cordials and spirits. Shortly thereafter, Maurice Cooper, a brewer, and spirits industry veteran, took the reigns from Mr. Jacquin, and infused his own passion and style into the business. Subsequently, numerous American classics would be born, like Jacquin’s Rock and Rye.

Circa 1930’s, post-prohibition: Cooper sells the first production bottle of Jacquin’s Rock and Rye. Prior to this, Rock and Rye was enjoyed only as a homemade concoction. Cooper discovered this delicious and potent creation while on a trip to Kentucky sourcing whiskey for his other brands. As luck would have it, Cooper was able to acquire one of these closely guarded recipes.

Cooper wisely vaulted the recipe, which enabled today’s recipe to be exactly the same as the very first bottling: fine Kentucky Rye Whiskey, rock candy, ripe Florida Oranges, and other fresh fruit. Additionally, Cooper created a proprietary bottle that allowed for the infusion of whole maraschino cherries and slices of hand cut ripe oranges. The end result is a delicious, complex combination of rich rye whiskey flavor, hints of toffee, caramel, and a light maraschino cherry citrus note.

During the golden era of cocktails in the 50’s and 60’s, Jacquin’s Rock and Rye became a popular American winter treat. Served as a shot, it provided warmth and comfort to many Americans.

Today, you too can enjoy the comforting properties of this American classic, best served ice-cold, straight up, as a shot. Also, try a shot over the rocks with a couple of dashes of Angostura ® bitters for a surprisingly perfect version of an “Old Fashioned” cocktail.

Jacquin’s Rock and Rye can also add a unique and delicious flair to many classic whiskey drinks. Try Jacquin’s Rock and Rye in a Sazerac, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour, instead of whiskey.
