The final instalment in The Seasons series comprises three single cask whiskies that capture the flavours and aromas of spring. We searched for casks that evoked nature waking up after a long winter, and settled on fresh young single malts with abundant green and floral notes. These are elegant, expressive whiskies that are perfect for sharing on the first warm and sunny days of the year. Each one was drawn from a single cask and bottled without additives or chill-filtration.

This stunning young Linkwood has a perfumed nose of honeysuckle, lemongrass and fresh linens, while the palate offers notes of yuzu sake, cloudy apple juice and green lawns after a shower of rain. The oak influence is light here, allowing the spirit character to really shine – exactly what we were looking for in our spring single malts. It’s an ideal dram to enjoy outdoors when the weather starts to brighten.

When we first tried this bright, leafy single malt from the lesser-seen Glentauchers distillery, we knew it would make a perfect addition to The Seasons: Spring. After 10 years in an American oak barrel, it offers fresh white fruit and green notes of sencha tea and celery bitters. There’s also a herbal quality to this whisky that brings to mind dry vermouth and alpine liqueurs. This is superb with a little dash of water to bring those bittersweet notes to the fore.

A whisky that made us think of an optimistic barbecue in the first weeks of spring. This youthful Islay malt is packed with notes of grilled padron peppers, cactus tacos lashed with fresh lime juice and asparagus in season. Far from being a total smoke bomb, the peat here is restrained and elegant like a nice mezcal. Excellent neat but also performs well in a highball with ice, soda and a sprig of mint.
